As soon as you drop the pasta into the pot, turn it gently using a ladle or a big spoon. Here are some tips Italian use to ensure that their pasta is al dente: It’s only by tasting the pasta yourself that you can make sure it’s al dente. The cooking time on the package of your pasta is just a useful reference. The concept of “set it and forget it” is not really part of Italian culture. Italians love to say that pasta may be a simple dish but it still requires a lot of attention - and they’re right. Your teeth will tell you whether your pasta is al dente or not. This means that the best way to know if your pasta is al dente is by pulling out a piece of pasta while it’s still boiling in the pot and biting it. It’s something you feel, not something you explain. Only pasta al dente is considered acceptable:īelieve it or not, even Italians have a hard time explaining what “al dente” actually means. There are three basic terms to talk about pasta in Italian. If asked to choose between a plate of mushy pasta or no pasta at all, most Italians would prefer the second option. The opposite of pasta al dente is overcooked pasta, which is almost a capital sin in Italy. It describes the texture of cooked pasta when it’s tender but firm and chewy when you bite into it. Pasta al dente is firm to the teeth the exterior layer is soft, while the core remains compact but flexible. The phrase al dente literally translates from Italian to mean to the tooth. Either way, al dente pasta should have a bite to it. The dot represents the center of the pasta is slightly undercooked. Others say that al dente is when the dot is no longer there. The term “pasta al dente” refers to the sensation of biting pasta. Some chefs suggest that when you bite into a piece of pasta which is cooked al dente, you should see a tiny white dot in the center of the pasta. But this meal plan has actually made dinner at our home MORE like the ideal that we all strive for-where everyone is sitting around the table together, enjoying one another’s company. Does the whole thing seem too utilitarian? You may be right. Plus many more! If you need more easy dinner ideas - and who doesn’t? - then take a look: 30+ Ridiculously Easy Dinners for Busy Families on a Budget. The recipes for most of the meals in this easy rotating meal plan can be found in my ebook, 30+ Ridiculously Easy Dinners for Busy Families on a Budget. So OK, I can bet you’re ready by now to see exactly what type of meals our family is getting over the two weeks. I couldn’t do that with every meal, obviously, but many of them are indeed favorites for our family. The trick is to choose meals that everyone LOVES, the type of meals that they would willingly eat every day if they could. And you’d be surprised to find that it doesn’t really get boring all that fast. But the beauty of that is I only have to do that occasionally, not every week or two weeks or month. If one of the planned meals is getting boring week after week, I can find another one and replace the boring one. If there is a holiday or special occasion, I can insert a festive meal. :-)ĥ) Guess what? The menu plan is NOT SET IN STONE. So why try to be something I’m not? If you haven’t figured it out yet, I am all about easy. The hubby, although he would certainly enjoy something more elaborate, is not picky about that. My kids don’t really care how involved the prep is they just want something yummy. I actually specifically chose recipes with few ingredients (another way to affect the bottom line, see #2 above) and easy prep. Have I ever mentioned that I really don’t like to cook? Only about a million times, right? So having recipes that I use over and over means I don’t have to spend any more time in the kitchen than is absolutely necessary, because I’ve gotten used to preparing them and don’t have to try to figure them out from scratch (pun intended, haha). And the side dishes can be different every time-sometimes that’s all it takes to make a meal seem new.Ĥ) Food prep gets streamlined real fast. Other nights don’t have as much flexibility, but there are plenty that do. But guess what, I can make either regular chili with ground beef, or I can make meatless chili, or I can make white chicken chili. One of the items on my Week 1 plan is chili. With this plan I have been able to reduce the food allotment by quite a bit (about $400 a month, seriously), thus leaving some money for other uses (or in some months, to keep us from using credit).ģ) There is still room for variety. Food is one of the few budget categories that I can still affect all the other bills are pretty much fixed and I can’t trim them down any more. This was probably my main reason for instigating the two-week plan. Gone are the days of the ever-changing list and the usually-not-happy surprise when you get to the checkout. (Did I mention you never have to sit down with the recipe books ever again, if you don’t want to?)Ģ) The grocery list stays fairly constant, so you can gauge how much you will spend pretty easily. But also, desperate times call for desperate measures (see #2 below), and so here is how I look at it:ġ) Menu planning gets done ONCE. There is some variety built in, as you’ll see below. They say variety is the spice of life, right? And so who would want to have the same meal every two weeks ad infinitum? I can hear you asking this of yourself and thereby dismissing the idea out of hand - but don’t just yet. Wait, what? You can use this meal plan forever? Doesn’t that get boring? Plastic pollution may be addressed in multiple ways, with the concept of reduce, reuse, and recycle representing a helpful but imperfect solution. Halden, in Plastic Waste and Recycling, 2020 20.5.4 Reduce, reuse, and recycle Also, recent developments such as composting, phytoremediation, and mushroom culturing have substantial potential in cleanup of these wastes.Ĭayla R. Pleurotus cultivation may even aid removal of pollutants from contaminated waste sites.įood waste can be treated by a two-stage anaerobic process, followed by an aerobic treatment to completely mineralize the pollutants. Producing a crop of mushrooms while disposing of an otherwise hazardous waste has become a popular “research model” in recent years. While actively growing, these mushrooms produce enzymes that can degrade lignins, phenolics, and tannins. Apart from the general methods, these wastes can also be detoxified by growing mushrooms (e.g., Pleurotus and Lentinula species). Residues from extraction of oils such as cotton, olive, and palm contain tannins and phenolics that are toxic to plants and animals. Examples in the literature show that the full range of food processing wastes can be composted, including fruit and vegetable wastes such as peelings and skin whole fish and fish offal meat processing wastes such as paunch contents, blood, fats, intestines, and manure and grain processing wastes such as chaff, hulls, pods, stems, and weeds ( Schaub and Leonard, 1996). Composition of the composting feedstock needs to be controlled to obtain the appropriate physical mix to allow the natural composting aerobic bioprocesses to proceed. Composted material is valued as a soil amendment or potting soil, but widespread use and marketability are constrained by shipping cost. However, odor and leaching of soluble constituents are limiting factors. Composting is one such option of disposal. Apart from the well-known methods of bioremediation, newer methodologies have been adopted for improving the efficiency of transformation, reducing sludge formation, and aiding in the formation of sludge that can be used for farming purposes. Two-phase reactor systems are best suited for degradation. All the same, the waste generated from this industry (as discussed earlier) is best treated by bioremediation methods. The four Rs of waste management (recover, reduce, reuse, and recycle) are best suited for the food industry.
